its Vaccinate for Life campaign in Malaysia to raise awareness and educate the public on

Pneumonia is today one of the leading causes of deaths in children, accounting for 18% of all deaths of children under five worldwide. Children under five years old are particularly susceptible to the disease especially those with compromised immune systems which may be weakened by malnutrition or undernourishment, especially in infants who are not exclusively breast-fed in spite of it being preventable and treatable in many cases3.

In Malaysia, pneumonia is listed as one of the top five causes of death according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.,6 Pneumonia was the principal cause of death for the population aged 0 to 14 years in 2018 at 4.8 per cent.

Pneumonia, a lung infection, can be caused by different bacteria, viruses and even fungi. Pneumococcal disease, in either invasive or non-invasive forms, is an infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria (pneumococcus).1, Pneumococcus can cause various types of infections, some of which can be life-threatening.1 One of the most common causes of severe pneumonia is pneumococcus bacteria.2 Besides pneumonia, pneumococcus bacteria can also cause ear and sinus infections (non-invasive).1

‘Invasive’ pneumococcal bacteria can invade the bloodstream causing bloodstream infection (bacteremia) and meningitis (infection of the tissues and fluids covering the brain and spinal cord).1,2

The incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) according to a 4-year study (2014 – 2017) was estimated at 3.8 per 100 000 cases each year in Malaysia in children aged five years and below.

While pneumococcal disease is a very serious illness, invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) is deadly as it is an invasive bacteria infection in children. Children under two years of age fall into the highest general risk group for IPD.

There are vaccines to prevent pneumococcal disease in children and adults.2 The introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) in many countries worldwide has helped to reduce infant deaths from pneumonia. Globally, while an estimated 71.3 million infants have received PCV, at the end of 2018, there were 55 million infants who still had no access to PCV.

“Next to clean drinking water, vaccination is the most powerful public health policy in preventing infectious diseases. We at GSK, believe that every child deserves access to vaccination. Through vaccination it has been demonstrated that diseases such as small pox can be eradicated. With improving healthcare policies and access we will continue to see the elimination of mortality and morbidity due to infectious diseases,” said Dr. Ashwini Saha, Vaccine Medical Director, GSK Malaysia.

“We truly support the Ministry of Health’s call for children to be vaccinated against pneumococcal disease. We certainly welcome the much-awaited news on the inclusion of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) into the National Immunisation Programme (NIP),” said Mr. David Lin.

The vaccinations we receive as children can certainly protect us from life-threatening or debilitating diseases and lays the foundation for a stronger immunity later in life.”

Meet Fisher-Price's Child Development Expert to talk about play and learn

Fisher-Price hosted an event titled “Learning Revolutionised” hosted by Dr. Deborah Weber, Director of Early Childhood Development at Fisher-Price. Dr. Weber, who is based in Aurora, New York, came all the way to Malaysia to speak with the media and discuss what goes into raising well-rounded kids in a technologically advancing world.

From the moment they are born, children have a natural inclination to explore the world around them. How do they do that? Largely through play. If play is such a naturally occuring window through which kids see the world, it follows that the kind of toys they play with will have a large impact on the kind of play they get to participate in. This is the topic that Fisher-Price○R set out to explore at their event titled “Learning Revolutionised,” overseen by Dr. Deborah Weber, Director of Early Childhood Development at Fisher-Price○R.

This could not have been a more timely reminder in our technologically advancing world. It isn’t uncommon to see young children at a dinner table with a smartphone or tablet propped in front of them while the adults at the table chat or do the same. Gadgets are undeniably effective as devices of distraction, but healthy parameters do need to be set. Dr. Weber provided some useful tips that parents could apply in managing gadget time for their kids: review content appropriateness, limits on gadget time, and ensuring that there are periodical breaks between each session.


On the topic of technological advancements, Dr. Weber highlighted the growing importance of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) method in today’s early childhood development. The STEM method puts an emphasis in active and systematic thinking - sharpening critical thinking and problem solving skills. It plays a large role in preparing children to build globally competitive characters, ready to take on a wide range of technical and creative careers in the future.

With the intention to meet the growing need for an early STEM education, Fisher-Price○R presents the Think & Learn line of toys that combines STEM methods and technology-based learning systems. Dr. Weber demonstrated how one of these toys, the Code-A-PillarTM, works to do exactly this. The toy features 9 easy-to-connect segments that preschoolers can arrange and rearrange to “tell” the toy how to move: forward, left, right, wiggle, dance or even wait for a couple seconds before moving again. Kids start the Code-a-pillarTM at point A and figure out how to get it to move to destination point B through sequencing.


Dr. Weber emphasised “Every parent wants to give their children the best possible start in life. It is important that throughout the process, parents are also involved in play time, witnessing their child’s early development first hand. In a technologically changing world, it is becoming more crucial for children to develop problem solving skills and what other way to best develop this skill then through play! When kids are busy playing, they are building more than preschool learning: they are building the foundation to grow into big thinkers.”

It's not baby bump just layered of fats

Tomorrow back to school, so mommies are you ready to get start with school tomorrow? Yeah sending children to school then fetching them back or sending them to next destination maybe tuition or other activities. I have friends with schedule plan for their children. As for me, I have too as my son is poor in some subjects in school. He needs to attend tuition center to learn and get knowledge though I can try teaching him but bad news is he's not listening and it takes longer time to do. I saw his books and exercises, it's all getting tougher and harder which gives me out of hands to teach. I can't even read some words which printed in mandarin. Though we know the exam and studies are getting harder and tougher, we not giving up yet, but some parents have choose to transfer their child to another school. Some of them can fork out money for private or international school, but we can't afford so we prefer to continue this school. He knows he's poor in few subjects and he has no interest of changing school, he says he would try his best.

Anyway I put up the title up baby bump as many people even relatives think that I am expecting again. Oh well, I am not it's just layered of fats I am gaining. Yeah gaining weight for me is easy and losing weight is tough for me.

It's fifth day of Hari Raya today, we just stay at home beside sending son to tuition. My dear starts work tomorrow as he took leaves to rest at home. This coming Thursday my dad will have his right eye's laser. My dad told me it cost RM3200 each time laser, it's a cost for health and better eye sight. He's already have high blood pressure for many years, now he's also taking medicines of diabetes and high cholesterol. Is it due to aging? He is 70 years old this coming December.

Road accidents during festive season

It's festive season, so everyone do drive safe and don't speed. This morning I on way to go pick up my son from tuition centre and I saw it's a long queue of cars at traffic light. I saw two cars in terrible condition, one car without air bag and windscreen is badly damage. An ambulance has come to pick up the injury driver to hospital. Two cars collision near the traffic light of USJ 5 and USJ 4.

In another accident, a blogger friend of mine had a minor injury too but his car accidents was last night. A motorcycle speeding and hit pedestrian then hitting his car.

Talking about road accidents, I have to decline some invitation for food review. One of the reasons is the venue is far away from me, I need to drive in the night so that's a bad idea because waze app always bring me a long way home and I often get lost. No doubt without waze app, I maybe more lost.

There was an event I attended in Kuala Lumpur, it was over at 6 pm then heavy traffic jam plus rain for me to get home. I reached home at 8pm in the night, 2 hours of traffic jam and holding your pee which is serious as federal highway doesn't have any stop for toilet break.

Oh well, let's get back to road safety yeah, drive safe and always check your car headlights and tail lights make sure everything is working.

Infant Language Development Tips

We all want our little ones to talk and talk faster and better than other kids. Usually, an infant starts talking after nine months. However, if you want them to talk faster and better at an early age, start training them at an early stage. So, as soon as your little one is six months old or so, start interacting with them in a way to help them develop their language tips.

Is it necessary to bathe newborn baby everyday?

Babies need to be kept clean, but frequent baths or over-cleaning can damage a new-born’s delicate skin. To properly care for your baby’s skin first you must understand some facts about your baby’s skin.

Many parents often wonder, how often should I bathe my baby? Do I really need to give him regular baths? How many times should I bathe my baby? How do I know if my baby is clean enough?

Baby’s skin is 30% thinner than adult skin, with a barrier function that is still thin and weak. This barrier function, which continues to develop during their first 12 months helps to protect the skin against harsh environmental elements like the sun and wind, but this barrier function can be disrupted by harsh soaps and cleansers. Although your baby’s skin is naturally more hydrated than yours in the first 12 months of life and it may seem visibly hydrated and soft even after cleansing, your baby’s skin actually loses moisture very easily. To prevent moisture loss from baby’s skin it needs proper care so that the barrier function remains healthy.

In the first days of your baby’s life, gentle care and hygiene are very important to protect your new-born’s delicate skin. Naturally, every parent wants the best for their baby and do not want to do anything that might lead to common skin troubles. However, there are some parents who go to the extreme and refuse to use any kind of cleanser at all, while others take the opposite view by insisting that their child is kept clean at all times, even if it means bathing them several times a day.

“As a general rule, babies can be bathed once or twice a day”; says paediatrician Dr. Foo Chee Hoe. This excludes regular cleansing between diaper changes and keeping their mouth and hands clean throughout the day. Despite our warm weather, avoid giving frequent baths so that your new-born’s delicate skin is able to maintain its natural moisture and pH balance. Most importantly, remember to use products that are clinically proven to be safe, mild and effective for babies.”

Here are some simple Do’s and Don’ts to keep in mind for baby’s bath time:

Do

• Prepare what you need in advance.
• Test the water temperature before putting baby in. Use a bath thermometer to check for atemperature of 37 degrees. If you don’t have a thermometer, dip your whole elbow into the water to test that it is not too hot or too cold.
• Keep it simple. All you need is a bath with warm water, a mild and gentle baby cleanser and a fresh towel, as well as a calm and safe space to undress and later dress your baby. If your baby is still very small, a small basin placed on a flat, stable surface such as a countertop may be easier for bathing your new-born rather than a full-sized baby bathtub. When using a baby bathtub, use a rubber mat to prevent baby from sliding.
• Stay calm. Your baby’s temperament will often reflect your own mood. Enjoy the bath time experience because every bath time can be a special moment to help a mother and her baby develop a stronger and deeper bond. To maximise the benefits, create a soothing ritual out of bath times; choose a time when you’re least likely to be interrupted, in between feeds so that he is neither full nor hungry, and use the time to interact fully with your child, without rushing.
• Give your full attention to your baby; distractions like the telephone ringing will just have to wait.

Don’ts

• Don’t leave your baby unattended even for a moment, regardless of whether he is in the tub or on the changing mat. Taking your attention away from your baby even for a second can affect his safety and well-being.
• Don’t use any kind of skincare or products that is not specifically formulated for babies as may contain ingredients that are too harsh for baby’s delicate skin, leaving it dry or irritated.

As you can read above article that baby skin is 30% thinner than adult's skin. Baby is like us, he/she will feel sticky and sweaty in different environment. 

I recalled my mom-in-law helping me with my confinement and she is one that in charge to bath my baby. My son was bath everyday,  he was sweaty and feeling uneasy before his bath.  It's important to check water temperature, if you are using baby bath tub, you can use your elbow to test the water. Don't let the water be too hot or too cold.

I am happy to know that my friend is planning to shop diapers for their baby, it's good time to shop during the roadshow, check out the PetPet roadshow which started on 7th November 2014 until 31st December 2014 at various locations around Klang Valley including AEON BIG Putrajaya, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn (Kajang), Wangsa Maju (Kuala Lumpur), AEON Bandar Utama (Bandar Utama) and Aeon AU2 (Kuala Lumpur) to promote its day and night solutions for babies through its campaign ‘Siang & Malam, Si Manja Dilindungi’.



This campaign will introduce various methods and tools that will help babies achieve uninterrupted play time and sleep while at the same time help babies achieve better learning abilities. The roadshow will feature a host of activities which include PETPET’s IQ test for babies – a simple tool to test a baby’s IQ level and PETPET’s ‘Ambil Gambar, Like and Menang’ photo contest that will win prizes up to RM30,000.


Dynas Mokhtar, PETPET’s brand ambassador will also be appearing at the roadshow to offer tips to mothers on how to manage babies’ sleep time and play time. Other topics of discussion to include diet, nutrition, sleep hygiene and learning the psychology of your baby. It will be a fun event to know your baby better and understand ways in helping your baby achieve better learning abilities. There will also be autograph sessions with Dynas at the campaign locations.

Urban Mom 2014 event with flexWorkLife.my

What did you do on last Sunday? We have a family day's out at 1 Utama, I found out of the Urban Mom 2014 events from the Facebook. We decided to drop by at the Urban Mom 2014 event, this is where the fun starts for the kids. They get to play sands art, each of them pick a card that they prefer and start putting color sands on them after peeling off the sticker one at a time. 

flexWorkLife.my the booth caught my attention, it's about where housewives or full time moms make a career come back,. I decided to stay to listen the Urban Mom event, the flexWorkLife.my's talkshow. "I Made A Career Comeback" with guests  Ms. Salika Suksuwan, Head, Industry Partnerships, Talent Corporation Malaysia, Ms. Nisa Hidayah, Talent Acquisition Specialist, Standard Chartered and Ms. Pauline Teo, HR Analyst, BASF Asia-Pacific Service Centre Sdn Bhd.

After listen the talk, back home I decided to look up for the flexWorkLife.my. I find this website useful for mommy or housewife who are planning to make a come back to career. This website is a network of employers, you can search for the suitable job position from there. I am sure mommies will like to find suitable employer who offer flexible work arrangements.

Every mom will prefers a flexi-hours working so they can come home in time to cook or fetch their children back from school. I know friends that have interest to have a career come back but they didn't know where to start or find a suitable job. flexWorkLife.my is looking out get the best working practices for women (both working moms and women who is preparing for a career comeback).

Toddler beheaded, head next to body

I'm sad to see this news about the toddler beheaded, she's only 2 year old. Someone abducted her and killed her then beheaded her.

My heart break, how could anyone be so cold blooded?!

She's only two year old, what harm can she do to you? Why this mad man killed her?!

No matter where we are, we need to keep an eye on our child.

My charming boys

Being mommy of two boys, yeah just boys. No girl for me, I have my boys after my ectopic pregnancy.

It was 12 years ago, I had ectopic pregnancy during pregnancy of 8 weeks, I experienced dark spots regularly from vaginal bleeding. Not just that I felt abdominal pain, it was uneasy feeling for me. I went to check medical center at Taipan USJ, Subang Jaya. Sad to say doctors unable to view sac at all. Taken numberous time of blood test each visit, we know we need to head for specialist.

After 4th blood check, we decided no more going this medical center. We headed to SJMC, the afternoon we saw the gynae. Once he asked me about my situation, he knows ectopic pregnancy. The night was admission to hospital, he suggest to have the surgery next morning because it's double or trip charges more in the night. I mean the charges of medical bill for night surgery would cost more. He unable to stop the bleeding of my right fallopian tube, on the spot he remove it for my safety. I remembered the he told me that if he didn't remove it, I need to undergo second surgery.

Losing right fallopian tube, gynae says there is no problem with conceive another child.

I am thankful being mommy of this two charming boys.

Safety gate for baby

Do you think it is important to have safety gate at home? Some parents put them between the kitchen door, 1st floor of the house between walls of staircase. I have the safety gate put up at 1st floor between walls of staircase for my first child. I afraid of him fall down from stairs, he was a good boy.

For second child, my active boy his more active than his eldest brother. He's able to pull up the gate door by himself. He can open and shut it, though it is heavy! Sometimes he would scream for help as he wants to close the gate door.

Beware of safety gate for baby, you need to check whether the lock to wall is secure or not. Always checking to prevent accidents at home. There was a time my 8 years old open the gate door but he fell down, lucky he was opening for coming upstairs not going down stairs. The whole gate fell down on the floor and he's on top of it. It really shocked me for the moment, lucky he's alright no injury.

Always check the screw of the safety gate between walls, they can get loose sometimes.

Happy Mother's Day to all moms

How did you celebrate the special day with your mom? I have a fun day out with mom and my family members. I gave mom gift of skin care, lipstick and a pair of handmade earrings. I also gave her a Mother's Day card coloured by my son and me. :D

Now don't forget next month is Father's Day. What's your plan?

I want my toddler to be happy!

Being mommy is never an easy job, I would be sad if my baby is not happy. Now my baby is going to be 2 year old this June, he's active running about here and there. He's not happy with wet diapers or drypants, no kidding he would be finding way to pull it off or remove it by himself. :D

Boy he's growing up fast, I am happy if he's happy! I have purchased many diapers for him and I know it is time to change him to drypants, he would be turning none stop when changing diapers.

I know if he's not happy with his diaper or drypants, he would be cranky and even having rashes at bottom! I found the solution to keep my toddler happy and active at the same time. :D
