SPOTLIGHT ON NUTRITION FOR PREGNANT & NURSING MUMS AND BABIES AT TOLLYJOY’S BABY DAY 2017

It's mommy time out last Saturday, thank you Tollyjoy Malaysia for inviting me to the Tollyjoy's Baby Day 2017, the last time I went to Tollyjoy event was the Tollyjoy's world's breastfeeding week in year 2014.

The age-old adage 'You are what you eat' is never truer, nor more important when it comes to expectant and nursing mothers and their babies. Not only is pregnancy nutrition essential for healthy foetal development,1eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet also helps to build a strong foundation for the baby's healthy development in the future2. Recognising this, Tollyjoy Corporation has once again teamed up with OrphanCARE Foundation to host two exciting events in celebration of their signature initiative, Tollyjoy Baby Day 2017.


Launched in Malaysia in 2015 in collaboration with OrphanCARE, Tollyjoy Baby Day is a special day dedicated to appreciate babies and to honour the significant journey as parents selflessly care and provide for their precious ones. It emphasises the importance of family, love and care to every child, including the less fortunate.

“This year, Tollyjoy Baby Day 2017 turns our focus on nutrition. We believe that whilst babies need plenty of love and affection, they also need to have good and adequate nutrition from the very beginning to thrive and reach their full potential," said Ms Grace Ng, Manager, Tollyjoy Corporation.

Held over two days, Tollyjoy Baby Day 2017 gathered members of the media and parenting bloggers respectively, to a Media Interview Session and a Baby Day Bloggers’ Party. Among the highlights was a special talk by Ms Rozanna M. Rosly, Head of Dietetics of University Malaya Specialist Centre on the importance of nutrition for mothers-to-be, nursing mothers and babies. I'm happy to be the among parenting bloggers that attended.


Sharing her expertise, Ms Rozanna said, "Pregnancy is the one time in life that a mother's eating habits directly affects another person. Mom's decision to incorporate delicious vegetables, whole grains and legumes, lean protein and other healthy food choices into their eating plan before and during pregnancy can improve mom's fertility, keep them feeling healthy throughout, and pave the way for an easier delivery. It also helps to establish the building blocks of growth, giving babies a strong start in life."

 Ms Rozanna showed how fun it can be to prepare healthy yet delicious meals at home. The tasty treats included Crunchy Fruits Layer made with honeydew cubes layered with oats, low-fat yoghurt and strawberry jam.

Recipe of Crunchy Fruits Layer: 
(Recipes are taken from Buku Masakan Philhan Pakar Makanan (Jilid 2) and used with permission of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia.
Preparation 20 minutes:
Servings: 2

Ingredient:
300g (3 cuts) honeydew in cubes,
75g (1 cup) oats, baked till crispy,
150 ml (2/3 cup) low fat yoghurt,
15 ml (1 tablespoon) strawberry,
15 ml (1 tablespoon) watermelon juice

Method:

1. Divide the cubed honeydew into 2 glasses and put aside the remainder for decoration.
2. Place a flat layer of oats above the fruit and then a layer of low fat yoghurt. 
3. Mix the jam and watermelon juice in a separate container and then place it on top of the yoghurt in the glass.
4. Lastly, decorate it with remaining cubed honeydew and serve.

She advised that infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months to achieve optimal growth, development and health. Nursing mums must also place importance on their nutritional intake. Thereafter, as babies’ nutritional requirements evolve, they should receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary food. Mums should continue to breastfeed if possible.


We were also treated to an interactive meal demonstration at the Tollyjoy Baby Day 2017 celebration where Ms Rozanna showed how fun it can be to prepare healthy yet delicious meals at home. The tasty treats included Crunchy Fruits Layer made with honeydew cubes layered with oats, low-fat yoghurt and strawberry jam, and topped off with watermelon juice; Plum and Banana Oatmeal Porridge; and Soybean Milk Smoothie prepared with fresh fruits. At the end of the demonstration, guests received a handbook containing various other healthy and fun recipes for parents and their babies.

 Games and various activities which included a Baby Bingo Game and Lucky Draw added to the excitement on Tollyjoy Baby Day 2017. Lucky draw winners took home hampers from Tollyjoy.

It's not baby bump just layered of fats

Tomorrow back to school, so mommies are you ready to get start with school tomorrow? Yeah sending children to school then fetching them back or sending them to next destination maybe tuition or other activities. I have friends with schedule plan for their children. As for me, I have too as my son is poor in some subjects in school. He needs to attend tuition center to learn and get knowledge though I can try teaching him but bad news is he's not listening and it takes longer time to do. I saw his books and exercises, it's all getting tougher and harder which gives me out of hands to teach. I can't even read some words which printed in mandarin. Though we know the exam and studies are getting harder and tougher, we not giving up yet, but some parents have choose to transfer their child to another school. Some of them can fork out money for private or international school, but we can't afford so we prefer to continue this school. He knows he's poor in few subjects and he has no interest of changing school, he says he would try his best.

Anyway I put up the title up baby bump as many people even relatives think that I am expecting again. Oh well, I am not it's just layered of fats I am gaining. Yeah gaining weight for me is easy and losing weight is tough for me.

It's fifth day of Hari Raya today, we just stay at home beside sending son to tuition. My dear starts work tomorrow as he took leaves to rest at home. This coming Thursday my dad will have his right eye's laser. My dad told me it cost RM3200 each time laser, it's a cost for health and better eye sight. He's already have high blood pressure for many years, now he's also taking medicines of diabetes and high cholesterol. Is it due to aging? He is 70 years old this coming December.

37 weeks and ready for c-section

Yesterday visit the doctors in the morning, I saw two doctors and the last doctor told me that baby is quite big I cannot deliver him normally. He says need c-section and that will be tomorrow at 4pm. Yesterday doc mention that it would be Tuesday for induced but we decided to go for c-section.

My baby is bigger than my first so doc says there will be hard for me to deliver and baby maybe cannot come out. Just now he was he explaining the procedure to me and says even c-section has complication and risk.

He even tell me about clip the tube so future no more have baby. If not do it now then future when need to do it need to pay few thousands. Now I am 31 year old and considering if want to clip or not. My friend told me that clip is not good as you get old easily and get sick too.

Gender of baby is boy!

I am 22 weeks pregnant now and I am expecting baby boy. It's going to be good news for my son who wanted a baby brother. My dear has a hunch thinking it might be baby girl, he was wrong! It's a boy and my son's clothing can now pass on to my baby. The baby bottles I need to purchase again as during the spring clean last year we throw it away.

I don't know the breast pump that I had for my son still functionsed or not. I wanted to breastfeed my baby, I remember I only manage to direct breastfeeding my son when he is four month old. It is long wait and I never give up trying, now my son is attending kindergarten I don't know how to cope with it. I mean I need to fetch him from kindergarten and take care of my baby?

I decided to have my confinement at my home sweet home because my son needs to attend to kindergarten. He needs to go there to catch up with the studies, one of the teachers ask me if I want to give him tuition. It is very expensive $50 for a subject, I don't think he is ready as he does not like study very much.
